CONSTRUCTION OF GASHUUNSUKHAIT RAILWAY TRANSSHIPMENT FACILITY BEGINS

2022/06/06

The government delegation headed by the Prime Minister of Mongolia Mr. Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai and joined by the Minister of Road and Transport Development Mr. Khaltar Luvsan, the Minister of Finance Mr. Javkhlan Bold, the Minister of Justice and Internal Affairs Mr. Nyambaatar Khishgee and the Minister of Mining and Heavy Industry Yondon Geleg attended the launch of the construction works of the Gashuunsukhait Railway Transshipment Facility on 26 May 2022, which is being carried out in the framework of the New Recovery Policy of the Government of Mongolia.

The Prime Minister Mr. Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai said, “As part of the Port Recovery Plan of the Mongolian government's New Recovery Policy, the construction of the export freight transshipment facility connected to Gashuunsukhait Port and Gantsmod Port in China is starting today. The two governments agreed on railway border crossing points at this location in February this year, ending the standstill on narrow and broad gauge issue which lasted for 14 years. The Gashuunsukhait port alone accounts for about 50 percent of Mongolia's main mining exports, the copper and coking coal and about 90 percent of total mining exports. We are pleased to note that the government was able to make appropriate decisions for more than 40 major projects which are included in the New Recovery Policy despite the challenges faced in connection with the pandemic and the military conflict.

Minister Khaltar Luvsan said “267 km Tavan Tolgoi-Gashuunsukhait railway will be put to use in July and the 226 km Zuunbayan-Khangi railway line will be finished in November this year. With the commissioning of these two railways, it will be possible to export an additional 50 million tons of mining products per year. With this railway access, the Tavan Tolgoi coal mine will have four ways to export coal to China. By this work we also mark the successful implementation of first phase of the New Recovery Policy. In addition, construction of new railways will continue until 2030. Those new railway lines will create new settlement areas along the railway, increase export earnings and make a significant contribution to Mongolia's economic development. I would like to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly for these projects”.
